Like most people, I am horrified by what happened in Orlando last weekend. It brings tears to my eyes and weighs down my heart in the heaviest of ways. I’m sure the hurt I feel is miniscule in comparison to those directly affected by the tragedy, though. The unsettling thing is knowing that this isn’t the first time, and it won’t be the last time something like this happens. So how do we stop it? How can we create a world in which innocent people aren’t attacked in such malicious ways? I’m not here to talk about gun laws or the second amendment. I have no interest in discussing politics in this forum. I’m here to talk about love.
As a parent I think now, more than ever, it’s essential to teach our children love and acceptance. Not only is it essential, it’s our responsibility; as parents, as people, as members of our communities, it is without a doubt our responsibility. We are all equal in the eyes of our Creator: black, white, yellow, gay, straight, lesbian, transgender, rich, poor, Republican, Democrat and everything in between. WE ARE ALL EQUAL. God doesn’t look at a gay man and love him less than a straight man. He doesn’t love a strung-out woman who lives in a cardboard box under an overpass any less than he loves a woman who goes to work everyday and lives a comfortable life in a swanky mansion. He loves us all equally. And so, it is our duty to love one another equally, regardless of sexual orientation, race, political affiliation, socioeconomic status or anything else that differentiates us from one another.
We must teach our children this. Let’s raise up a generation full of love and compassion and absent of judgment and hate. Let’s raise a generation who understands that absolutely no one is less than. Let’s raise a generation who accepts one another for who they are; a generation who celebrates one another’s differences; a generation who understands that our differences are what make life so beautiful. Let’s raise a generation that embraces LOVE and lives it out on a daily basis.
Because at the end of the day, loving one another is what is going to make a difference. More love, more kindness, more acceptance, more compassion and more fire in our hearts to serve one another – this, my friends…THIS is what can change the world.
