A lot of catching up to do!
When you decide you’re going to make family photography an official offering of your business, it also means there’s a whole lot of blogging to catch up on.
I’ve been photographing families for years. Literally since I purchased my first DSLR camera ten years ago. Families were my first clients to photograph, before newborns, engagements or weddings.
As I focused more on weddings and newborns, though, I removed the family photography portion of my website. I still photographed families when someone inquired if my schedule allowed, but it wasn’t something I advertised.
And therefore, I rarely blogged about the family sessions I did photograph! So now that means I have a lot of catching up to do!
Am I going to blog every single family session I’ve photographed over the past several years? Probably not. But I am going to share some of my favorites, so you all can get a better taste for my style!
My approach to photographing families
My approach to photographing families is similar to my approach with everything else I photograph. I know you’re not a model, so of course I’ll give you direction. But I also think it’s so important to let those natural, candid moments unfold.
Because years from now when your children are grown, what will you value more? Seeing their lively personalities jump through a photograph? Or a forced smile from them as they sit atop a wooden crate holding a prop? For me it’s the former, and I want to give you photographs you’ll value for many years to come.
Switching to Family Photography
Removing weddings from my “official” photography offerings in order to officially become a family photographer was bittersweet. I loved capturing weddings, and I am so honored and humbled to have been able to freeze in time such a momentous day for so many loving couples.
On the flipside, though, I’m SO excited to be able to capture the unique relationships, emotions and joy of families in the Raleigh area now. As a mom myself, I know how quickly time passes and the lightspeed at which our children grow. Being able to freeze those seasons of life for fellow parents is something I’m equally humbled and honored to be able to do.
