North Raleigh Family Photos at Green Hills County Park

In case you missed it, I recently did an Instagram giveaway for two family photo sessions in Raleigh. It was a part of celebrating my official move into family photography, and this sweet family was one of the winners!

Since Green Hills County Park was relatively near both of us and offered a good backdrop, we chose it for their North Raleigh family photos and lucked out with some dreamy summer light joining us.

High Energy!

Before our session, Cheyenne let me know that her son was super energetic, and he did deliver with the energy. But as I told her, I’d opt for high energy over no energy any day. As you’ll see in the photos, that part of his personality really came through. I love knowing they’ll be able to look back on these and see that part of him once he’s older and this phase has passed.

And he has a little sister who was so chill the entire time – probably because she was ready for bed since we kept her up past her bedtime! But that’s what you have to do sometimes for that perfect light. 🙂

Let them be themselves

Family photos can sometimes be stressful, right? If you’re a parent who’s ever done family photos, you’d probably agree.

This is why I think it’s so important to remember to let kids be themselves. If my lens is the one capturing you, I actually want them to be themselves. I want to capture who they are – not some super-posed version of them.

I actually can’t do that if mom and dad are trying to finangle them into doing everything perfectly. And as you’ll see these parents didn’t do a lot of finangling and instead let them kids be who they are. The result? Authentic photos.

So the good news is that the pressure is off of you as a parent if I’m the one capturing your family. It’s your job to get them dressed. It’s my job to capture who they are.
