Family photos with two boys

Family photos with two boys? File this under things I’m super familiar with. And that’s one of the reasons this session was so much fun for me! Stephen and Diana’s boys are very close in age to my own. Not only that, but one of their boys is also named Beckett, and Diana’s just a few days further along in pregnancy right now than I am! How crazy, right?!

The best ages for family photos

The boys were three and five at the time of this session, and those are some of my favorite ages to photograph. They’re old enough to understand prompts and directions, but they’re also still young enough to not get awkward in front of the camera.

So in my opinion, it’s one of the best ages to take full advantage and get those adorable, totally candid photos with your kids. It won’t be long before they’re teenagers who would rather gouge their eyes out than snuggle or hug mom and dad in front of a camera. 😅

Not only that, but they’re also so full of energy. While some photographers may see this as a problem, I fully embrace it. The more energy, the more possibility for unexpected moments to unfold. And the more likely your kids are to look like themselves in photos.

Candid vs. Posed Photography

I understand why you might want a photo of your child sitting perfectly still smiling. But I also know that the photos you’ll treasure most when you look back will be the ones where you can see their personality. You’ll treasure the photos where you can hear that sweet childhood laughter and feel the affection they once gave so freely.

So think about your future self the next time you have family photos done. Think about what you’ll really want once your kids are grown. And then book a photographer accordingly.

Maybe you do think you’ll want that perfectly posed photo. But if you think you may want something that shows their true colors, you know where to find me.
