While this extended family session started out with nine people, the majority of the session was actually a precious family of three! It made for a fun combination of photos, and a lively start to our time together!

The heart behind an extended family session

I don’t photograph a lot of extended family sessions, but I do think there is something really special about photographing a large family unit every once in a while. Being able to photograph grandkids with their grandparents especially makes my heart swell.

Having grown up very close to my grandparents, I know from personal experience how much those photos will be treasured for years down the road.

It’s also why I make it a point to go beyond the staged, everyone smiling and looking at the camera photos with an extended family session. Connections, relationships and bonds exist throughout an extended family, and capturing those is just as important as capturing them when it’s a single family unit.

Moving to a single family session

After the first 15 minutes of our time together, we transitioned to focus specifically on the Burke family.

Their daughter, Abigail, recently turned one and they wanted to celebrate her first year with photos! And y’all already know I think that’s an excellent idea.

After Abigail was born, her parents were told she may never walk or talk due to a condition she was born with. Fast forward to today, and she’s starting to walk while pushing a walker and is baby talking up a storm!

For these reasons and so many more, Abigail’s parents refer to her as a miracle baby. She’s already surpassed what was expected of her, and it’s clear that her parents are incredibly proud of her.

Not only are they proud, they are some of the most grateful parents I’ve seen. It’s obvious how much they adore their daughter and how grateful they are for every part of her life.

Thank you so much, to all nine of you for allowing me to freeze this season in time for you! You were a joy to work with!
