North Raleigh newborn photo sessions are my favorite title since I live in North Raleigh. Don’t get me wrong – I love my newborn photography clients no matter where they live! But there’s something about that short commute that brings me a little extra joy.
So you can imagine my delight when I learned that this sweet family lived less than a five minute drive away from me in North Raleigh!
Not only was the short commute a treat, but the natural light inside their townhome made my day too. Baby Vincent’s nursery was drenched in sunlight the entire time, and if you know me, you know that’s totally my jam.
Because I shoot film in addition to digital photography, light is extra important. With a digital camera, you can get away with less light. Without getting too technical, you can adjust your settings to compensate for a lack of good light to some extent. When shooting film, you can’t get away with poor lighting conditions. Your images will come back underexposed, muddy and basically unusable. At the expense of using a corny pun, film will expose poor lighting conditions.
All of this to say, I’m more appreciative than most when I find myself shooting a family or newborn session in a space with exceptional light!
After finishing up in Vincent’s nursery during this North Raleigh newborn photo session, I popped into the room next door to assess the light. It was a guest room and office and not a room that one would typically choose for newborn photos.
But I saw the potential with it. The room was on the same side of the townhome as the nursery, so it had the same gorgeous light pouring through it. Not only that, but the window was bigger than the one in the nursery. This means more light in the room, and you probably know by now that this is a really good thing in my book.
There was also a white comforter on the bed making for the perfect backdrop for their newborn photos. Needless to say, we cleared a few things off of the bed and went for it.
And I’m so happy that we did! It allowed us to do some different poses that we wouldn’t have been able to do in the nursery and add more variation to the images in their final newborn gallery.
If I’m ever photographing a North Raleigh newborn photo session for you, and I suggest an unconventional room, trust me! Maybe you didn’t expect part of your newborn session to take place in your dining room or your stairwell, but I promise I’ll make magic out of it.
Remember – light is king in photographs. So this is what I pay most attention to when I’m looking through the rooms in your home. I care much more about the light than the finishes on your kitchen countertops or if your primary bedroom looks like it’s straight out of a Pottery Barn magazine or not.
Using the rooms in your home in this way is part of what allows me to create the consistency that you see in my images. So even if it seems unexpected, I promise I’m doing it to create the best family or newborn photos for you!
