Will my home work for an in-home photo session?

When it comes to an in-home photo session, most people fear that their home is too disastrous for photos. And listen, I get it. I live with four young boys. The moments where my house is actually clean are few and far between.

But I have good news! Your house is not too messy. I haven’t seen it, and I can still assure you that we can make it work. Here are a few reasons why.

  1. I’ll only use two to three areas in your home for photos. I can actually guarantee you I won’t use the entirety of your home during an in-home photo session. This is because the areas I use are largely determined by where the natural light is. And you may not know this if you’re not a photographer, but during the two hour span I’m at your house for your photo session, the light will only be good on one side of your house. The other side is likely unusable. So we’ve already narrowed it down to half of your home that you’ll need to tidy up before your session!
  2. We’ll determine the rooms we’re going to use for your in-home photo session beforehand. Either through photos, videos or a FaceTime meeting, we’ll decide on which two to three areas of your home make the most sense to use. And honestly, they’re generally fairly small areas I’m using. I can shoot an entire session in front of one window if I need to. So rest assured, this isn’t going to require you tidying up even half of your home!
  3. Once we’ve determined the areas we’re going to be using, it’s much easier (and a lot less overwhelming) to know where to focus your tidying efforts! The night before your session, you can grab a laundry basket, visit these areas of your home and fill the basket with all of the clutter you don’t want showing up in your photos. You can even take larger items like baby toys and move them to rooms we won’t be using. You can visit the blog post at the following link for step-by-step instructions on how to prep your home for an in-home photo session.
  4. Every home has clutter. I know you look at images from in-home photo sessions I shoot and think everyone has a spectacularly clean home, but it’s not the case. They’ve all taken their clutter and moved it to a room that doesn’t show up in their photos. Their homes are no different from yours.

And with that, I present you with this. My client gave me permission to share photos of the clutter in her home. So if you have a room that looks like the photo below, know that it doesn’t mean you can’t have a photo session inside your home. We can always make it work!
