When Abbi reached out and asked me to do a mom and me session with her and her two boys, I jumped at the opportunity! As a fellow boy mom, I know how special the bond is between a mama and her sons.
I’ve thought a lot about why boys generally cling to their moms so tightly. And I’ve concluded that it has a lot to do with the expectations the world puts on them. They’re expected to be tough and courageous. They’re expected to bury their emotions.
But mom is their safe haven. She’s their soft spot to land. Mom has the arms they can fall into and unravel, whether they’ve outgrown them or not.
Mom doesn’t pass judgment when they shed a tear, and instead lovingly wipes the tears away. His emotions don’t make her uncomfortable, because as a woman, she’s always been free to feel her own.
Being able to photograph that bond for someone is an honor. It’s a bond that will continue to grow and evolve, but it’ll never again be the way that it is right now.
Not only is Abbi a mom to two sweet boys, she’s also a photographer! Photographing another photographer is both exciting and nerve wracking.
It’s exciting because you already know she’s put in the prep work and thought thoroughly about wardrobe choices so that everyone is prepared for the session. Believe me when I say that that goes a long way in the outcome of your photos!
It’s nerve wracking because you also know that she likely has high standards. And naturally, I want to deliver and meet and exceed those standards.
Any nerves that I had, though, faded away once I met Abbi and her boys.
