A family photo session with 6 people is always sure to be interesting – and I sincerely mean that in the best way possible!
One of the things I love most about photographing a large family is the opportunity for so many different interactions and bonds. Don’t get me wrong – it can be crazy and full of energy! But the tradeoff is always well worth it.
One of the most interesting parts of this session actually happened a couple of weeks beforehand. Lily emailed me and let me know that her youngest daughter had taken it upon herself to cut her own hair!
Luckily she was able to disguise it really well with a headband, but I swear that this is so classic of kids. I can’t tell you how many photo sessions I show up to where mom tells me that their son or daughter took a giant spill and ended up with a nice scrape smack dab on their cheek or forehead.
The good news is that those scrapes are generally pretty easy to cover up with a little editing magic! But I also understand how stressful that is as a parent.
Anytime we have upcoming family photos, I’m begging my boys to please be careful. And usually we arrive scathe free, but kids are incredibly accident prone – especially when you’re trying extra hard to avoid it it seems!
One of the other things that I loved most about this family photo session with 6 people is that they let their kids be kids. I understand that some wrangling of your children is necessary at times. But many times the best photos happen when kids are being their natural selves.
I’ve photographed families who let these moments happen and families who try to control every move their children make. And I can tell you without a doubt that the former always results in better photos. Not to mention it’s way less stressful for you as a parent!
So the next time you have family photos done, remember this. Those photos of them laughing, playing and being themselves will be something you’ll treasure far longer than you will a photo of them being perfect and smiling at the camera.
