Hi I’m Morgan! I’m a photography educator and Raleigh, NC newborn photographer and family photographer.

Meet Morgan

North Raleigh Newborn Session

Mazie was due at the end of August, so you could say I was quite surprised when her mama sent me a message in early August letting me know her newborn baby had already arrived!

This is a prime example as to why I mark my clients’ due dates on my calendar but don’t schedule their newborn session until after baby is born. Babies are wildly unpredictable! I know from experience 🙂

Being a first time mom

As I was heading out, Taryn (Mazie’s mom) and I talked about the complete shock you experience as a first time mom.

It’s impossible for anyone to prepare you for motherhood. IMPOSSIBLE. There’s nothing else like it, and there’s pretty much nothing else that will turn your world upside down like having a child.

The first couple of months simultaneously creep by and feel like a blur.

You sleep minimally and whenever you can and start to process the fact that you are now responsible for this tiny human being. Forever.

To say it can be overwhelming would be an understatement. And to be totally candid, I can’t say that I truly savored those first few weeks as a mom.

Does having a baby change your entire life?

Personally, I was wondering what on earth I’d done to my life. I liked my life before. Had I totally screwed it up by having a baby?

I know this is an unpopular thing to say, but I also know that many women feel this way the first time around. So I’m putting it out there and telling you it’s ok.

Let me assure you – you have not screwed up your life. You have added to it in an incredibly beautiful way.

But it does take some adjusting. It takes some getting used to.

Up until the point of having a child, you’ve likely lived life on your own terms. For the most part, you do whatever you want. You operate on your own schedule. You go where you want when you want, and that’s perfectly normal.

You may have thought you were busy before, but you’ll soon realize you were busy doing things that you wanted to do. You are now busy keeping a human being alive while still trying to maintain some sense of who you are as a person.

So no, it doesn’t happen overnight. This is a really massive life change. But it happens over time, and it becomes your new normal.

And believe it or not, one day you won’t be able to remember what life was like without that sweet babe.

In the meantime, though, it’s ok to feel completely shellshocked. It’s ok to wonder what on earth you’ve done to your life.

I promise you you’ve done something incredible. It just may take a while for you to see that part of it.
